ACCORDING TO the news, two places laid off 20,000 at each place. And another laid off 10,000 people. And all the stores say their sales were way down this year. People are afraid to buy anything anymore, for this has been a bad year. Small factories have also closed. And it all happened with the Democrats and Clinton.
I THINK the school board should look into its budget if it needs more money for teachers instead of always going to the people for taxes. We're taxed to death now, and especially since these energy bills have gone up so high. We can't call up people and ask them to send us more money if we can't pay our bills. The school board is going to have to cut back to pay their bills like we do.
I'M VERY sorry to see and hear that you Republicans are coming down with the same problems that afflicts your hero, Ronnie Reagan. You're griping about Bill and Hillary getting gifts for their homes from friends and well-wishers. In case you forgot, Ronnie and Nancy accepted a house from their followers. That sure makes the Clintons look like a bunch of pikers compared to the gifts that the Reagans got.
IN RESPONSE to a Speak Out item concerning careless pet owners, I just ask that people please keep in mind that many of these free-for the-taking animals are strays. Often the people placing the ad aren't the actual owners. The real owners of these pets abandoned them, and some nice person gives them a temporary shelter and tries to find them a home. I have adopted both a dog and a cat that were strays. I had them neutered and spayed. But I've had to find countless homes for other stray animals, and the free-for-the-taking ads give many pets a second chance.
I THINK your headline about Greenspan urging a tax cut is very misleading. I listened to his speech, and he did not urge a tax cut. He said he was willing to take a moderate tax cut, and he also cautioned that it would not help the economy for some time. He's very cautious on this tax cut, and he did not push it as your headline implied.
WE SEE in the news where the prices for soybeans, and corn are going down. They say this is from lack of exports. The more likely explanation is this is the time of year when many farmers have notes coming due, and they have to sell off their produce to get some money to pay off the note. The grain buyers and other buyers of farm products know this, and they are able to reduce the price and go ahead and get the product they want for less money. That's the most likely scenario.
ENTERTAINMENT CRAZED Americans seem to be tingling with excitement over "Survivor." How about a new version: Make most jobs minimum wage with little or no benefits. Now double, triple or quadruple all heating bills. Throw in outrageous gas prices to ensure that commuting is a problem. Allow lots of corporate mergers with a byproduct of loss of thousands of jobs due to downsizing. Think you can win? What's the prize, you ask? Well you might get to keep your job or even your home. You say you don't want to play. I'm afraid you already are.
I AM so tired of raking leaves every day. Every time the wind blows, we get all my neighbors' leaves. Everybody's tired of cleaning it up. They never clean their leaves.
