Bearing false witness

I FIND it interesting that Jesse Jackson is always referred to as "the Rev." Jesse Jackson. That means he is a member of the clergy. What is outrageous and disgraceful is that a clergyman like Jackson is bearing false witness against John Ashcroft. Shame on Jackson and all the other radical leftists who are trying to assassinate Ashcroft's character.

Empty promise

THOUGH DAVID Limbaugh would like you to believe otherwise, George W. Bush's appointment of in-your-face radicals like Ashcroft, Chavez and Norton betrayed Bush's promise to govern from the center and be a uniter. Frankly, it seems to me that if Bush takes the advice of Limbaugh and other out-of-the-mainstream movers and shakers and goes to war over the extremist Ashcroft, it will further illustrate that his promise of uniting, healing and bringing our nation together was a very empty one. Of course, Limbaugh was correct in saying that the controversy over Ashcroft is ultimately about power. That's what politics is all about. Those who voted for Bush because they believed he was serious about bipartisanship and reconciliation should have known better. On that point, I believe Limbaugh would concur.

We need honesty

IT LOOKS like if you are honest, moral and religious and believe in God as John Ashcroft does, they do not want you as attorney general. What a shame. He will be a strong leader for the country, one we can be proud of.

It's the dregs

THOUGH GARY Rust's quips and quotes are mostly from respectable Republican sources, he occasionally treks into territory occupied by those who would think it to be a compliment to be tabbed a trash tabloid journalist. The Drudge Report is the dregs.

Take it on

THERE HAVE been a couple callers lately who say it's the university's responsibility to buy the old Marquette and fix it up. It's not the university's responsibility. Who do you think is going to pay for it in the end anyway? If you think it needs to be preserved, you buy it and fix it up

Thanks, Humane Society

SOMEONE SHOULD thank the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri for its devotion to improving the quality of life for all animals. A caller recently accused the Humane Society of buying anti-hunting billboards. It did not. Those boards were donated to the shelter. The message is really one of anti-trapping, which is a really inhumane way of catching furbearers. Thank you to everyone who works with and supports the Humane Society for the fine work it does as champion of our beloved pets and animals.

Hypochondiac's life

I HAVE a question. Has there ever been a medical survey regarding how long the average hypochondriac lives? I know of at least two. One is my ex-mother-in-law who is pushing 70 years of age. And the second is my husband's mother, and she's in her early 80s. If they had half of what they say is wrong with them, they would have been dead a long time ago. I don't know why people would actually want something to be wrong with them when there actually isn't. There are too many sick people in this world. God help them.

Good billboard

I KNOW the anti-trapping that your "Stick to pets" caller was so upset about. I love that billboard. I certainly hope it stays.

No unifying action

THE SIGN of a good president would be one that would seek to unify the nation on his way out. Bill Clinton has shown that he is not capable of this by his actions in Chicago this week. I can't believe that he said that the Republicans won only by stopping the election. There was a full election which we don't need to go over again, and the election should have been over the day of the election like it was for us here in Missouri, and not drag on and on with Al Gore attempting to steal the election.

It's all music

TO THE person who called in "Wrong music honor": I am so sick of people saying that Eminem and rap isn't music. If the Grammys put it on there, I'm pretty sure it is music. I don't think country music is music. I don't like it. But do you hear me saying that the Grammys shouldn't honor it? It's music, I put up with it. I don't sit there and complain about it. I don't think you should either. If you don't like Eminem, do what I do when Third Eye Blind comes on the radio. I change the station.

Lack of courtesy

HAS ANYONE else noticed the lack of common sense and courtesy at local convenience stores? Why do so many people park in front of the gas pumps or in front of the door, often blocking the handicapped ramp, just to run in to get a soda or cigarettes? There's usually enough parking on the side of the building or in the designated parking spots that people don't need to block the gas pumps or the front door in order to save two steps.

Philosophy lesson

A QUOTE by Socrates: By all means, marry. If you marry a good woman, you'll be happy. If you marry a bad woman, you'll become a philosopher.
