Dixie Chicks tribute

I FIND it amusing that everyone is talking about how the Dixie Chicks condemned the president, America and patriotism. What I heard the Dixie Chicks say is that they were ashamed that the president was from Texas. If any of you had attended their most recent concert, you would have seen their wonderful tribute to the soldiers fighting overseas. From recent polls, most Americans (not Cape Girardeau) do not approve of this president.

Happiness recipe

ON ONE hand I hear the good people of this area say a person should be accountable for his own actions. Yet when someone does something on his own that someone else doesn't like, then the government should step in. My ultimate conclusion will probable be for each person to mind his own business, clean his own house, not air his dirty laundry and leave everyone else alone. That would be a recipe for happiness.

Stop crying

I SAID it before, and I will say it again. Republicans need to stop crying over their defeat in Congress. Republicans let the far right hijack the party. You elected crooks, drug addicts and sexual predators and can't understand how you lost.

Need health care

THE TIME has come for a national health-care program. It didn't hurt so much when we had good health-care coverage with our jobs. But those plans are either being cut out or the employee's share of the cost has gotten so high along with the deductibles that the middle class can't afford it.

Romney's conversion

DAVID LIMBAUGH described Democrat Hilary Clinton's initial pro-Iraq War stance as "shrewd." Limbaugh would likely describe Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's conversion from pro-choice to pro-life as principled.

Upholding the law

I APPRECIATED state Rep. Scott Lipke's response to House Speaker Rod Jetton's letter of attack. Like Lipke, I am opposed to gay sex. However, Lipke was upholding a U.S. Supreme Court decision. What kind of country would we live in if we could pick and choose which laws we wanted to follow? I also believe Lipke's letter proved that he was not being deceitful. It is clear that he did not attempt to hide the repeal of the gay sex ban.

News perspective

LET ME see if I have this Southeast Missouri mentality in regard to news coverage understood. If the news media report anything with which I agree, it is right on, true and newsworthy. If the media report anything with which I disagree, it is that awful L word (liberal) and contains not one word of truth. I stand totally amazed.

Free speech

IF YOU would buy the Dixie Chicks CD, you would know why they were given the Grammy. I wish people would get off their backs. They made a mistake and are still being beaten down for it. This is America, right? Freedom of speech, last time I heard, was our right in the land of the free.

Picking up trash

SPECIAL THANKS to the group of boys who have been picking up the trash and litter along Highway 177. It looks great.

Favorable pay

I WOULD like to thank and commend our teachers for doing the best job they can. I know they work long hours and are disrespected. When a teacher says he only makes $30,000 a year, this doesn't sound like a lot, but the pay is based on nine months of the year. I think $30,000 for nine months of work is pretty favorable.

Not a hotel

SOMEONE WHO was incarcerated in the Cape Girardeau County Jail was upset about the food and having to pay to be there. Don't break the law, and you won't have to worry about such things.

Rotating siren

THE WARNING siren in Jackson rotates. Have you never noticed that it periodically changes positions?

Not complaining

I ENJOYED the complaining comment from a teacher concerning salaries ending with the stipulation that "I am not complaining."

Low prices and jobs

UNIONS ARE one of the primary reasons that American businesses cannot compete. Just ask GM and Ford what unions did for their products, their workers and their place in the market. Before I listen to some union boss I'll support Wal-Mart for providing me a great product at a low price while providing jobs to this area.

Respect for teachers

AT ONE time I worked as a substitute school teacher. The biggest problem I faced and one of the biggest problems teachers face today is the lack of respect by the students. If parents would teach their children to respect others and respect people in positions of authority, maybe the teachers could do their job.

Media fanaticism

I HOPE everyone is raising their children to be skeptical about the global-warming fanaticism that the news media are promoting. Raise your children to think for themselves.
