SOME say that doing away with income tax and replacing it with a sales tax would not be fair because big business would be exempt and the burden would fall on the middle class and the poor. Businesses do not pay income taxes. They sell a product or a service and pass the cost of the tax on to consumers, who mainly are the working middle class and the working poor. One way or another, the middle class and the poor will pay the tax.
I live across from the fire station near the mall and can't help but notice how trashy it looks. Every day I see an old stove and military trailer in the back. What a shame. It used to be a well-kept place when I voted there.
CONSIDERING Patrick Naeger's comments to state Sen. Jason Crowell, I would say that Crowell made the right decision. Is Naeger in it for the glory or to help people? His behavior showed us the real Patrick Naeger.
THE problem with meth is the addicts who use it. As long as people want meth, there will always be suppliers. The war on drugs is and always will remain a failure.
THANKS to U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill for putting state Rep. Allen Icet in his place for being such an ingrate. Icet is part of a state government that willingly and wisely accepted federal stimulus dollars but is now complaining about it. If Icet keeps it up, he should have to have a session with the likes of Ice T on "Law and Order."
MAY Greene Elementary School was sold to a church for a mere $10,000. The Alternative School, which had met at L.J. Schultz School, was moved to the former May Greene school when Schultz was sold. The Cape Girardeau School District paid the church $1,200 a month to rent a portion for the Alternative School. How can I have confidence in the school district's fiscal management with such blatant mismanagement of taxpayers' dollars?
THE Jackson School District has a policy that allows students to turn in homework late, and the teacher must accept it up to the last day of each quarter for 60 percent of the score. How is this teaching responsibility to these kids? What job on Earth would allow you to do that?
SEN. Evan Bayh says he doesn't love Congress and has decided not to seek re-election. This is another indication of the appeal of Tea Party protesters across political divides. Our federal government is broken. Bayh had an opportunity to change it. He didn't.
