I recently had a thrilling experience watching former SEMO roundballer Nick Niemcyck score 56 points in Cape's talent-filled basketball league. Nick was a three-point scoring machine and those present got to witness a jaw-dropping performance. However, many of those in attendance claiming that it had to be a city league record were wrong. I think the record was set in the early '70s when Cape Central and SEMO all-star Kermit Meystedt racked up a single game total of 100 points.
You said in the "Out of the Past," 1964: "City fathers have passed an ordinance requiring building contractors to keep mud from their building sites off of the streets." I wonder if this ordinance is still in effect and if so why our building inspectors let some building contractors have mud spread for a block or more at times by departing trucks. If the 1964 ordinance is no longer in existence, it needs to be considered and passed again.
I just got through reading your Jan. 23 paper, particularly David Limbaugh, "The latest from Obamacare Central." I'm extremely blessed by that kind of writing and would like you to convey to him that some people really, really appreciate his honesty and his accurate reporting. And very blessed by it.
I want to thank the circulation department for the fine deliveries they have done during the bad weather this year. I especially want to thank the rural delivery men, such as Jim Monahan from Thebes, who's made it possible that we in the rural area of Alexander County and Cairo, Ill., never missed a delivery day. Again, I want to thank you and think you are just great.
I was very motivated by Mr. David Limbaugh's column about President Obama becoming a king. It made me give some serious thought as to whether we would be better off if the president were to become a limited or absolute monarch. I'm leaning toward the latter.
I hope the new postal advisory board can do something about getting the mail to the rural post offices earlier in the morning like they used to. It was bad enough when the distribution center was at Cape Girardeau, and now it is so much worse. I would like to get my mail earlier and the rural carriers don't know if they will get done by 6 p.m. or 10 p.m.
With all of these area school days missed to date, let's try an experiment. Cancel the rest of the school year except the days when the students take the standardized tests. If, perchance, student test scores soar then the dream of Alice Cooper and so many youth would be realized. Yes, the lyrics to the classic would become a reality. "School's out for the summer. Schools out FOREVER!"
Soon it's going to become more newsworthy to announce school openings.
