Red Star's help

I'M A senior citizen on a fixed income. I go to Red Star Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau every month and get a free basket. I appreciate it. It helps tremendously. This month all I could hear was more than 150 people complaining because they didn't get a turkey. All summer long there were only a few people there each month. On the holidays they go just to get the free turkey or ham. I thank God that Red Star is there to help me once a month. Everybody ought to be thankful they are there every month, not just for the turkey or the ham twice a year. God bless Red Star.

Save the best

CAPE GIRARDEAU downtown is a beautiful place with many historic buildings that have been refurbished and draw people. The problem is parking. Granted a parking lot is not as beautiful as a historic building, but there are a lot of buildings that are not beautiful, although they may be historic. Let's take down some of the buildings that history suggests will not be refurbished. We can't save all of them. Let's save the best.

Seeing the humor

I HAVE a son who is bipolar. Jay Leno's comic routines don't bother me. There's got to be something to laugh at in this life. You have to raise your kids so they can laugh at themselves. My son chuckles sometimes at the things he does. I don't think we can protect every individual in society. There has to be something to laugh at even though it's sad for the person who's afflicted.

Set an example

SOMEONE COMMENTED that he enjoyed the freedom of speeding. That is what's wrong with this country. And we wonder why our kids break laws. They break laws because they're taught by adults that it's OK to speed. It's the law. Obey all laws. Set a good example.

Delaware Park

THE TURKEY trot 5K was run in Delaware Park on the north side of Cape Girardeau. It's a wonderful park with a wonderful trail that was made by Cycle Werx Bicycle Shop. But the city needs to clean up the park. There's still a lot of concrete lying around and concrete foundations and old barbed-wire fences and junk in the park. If the city could clean that up, it would be the best park in the whole city.

Distorted movies

I WANT to comment about the movies that are coming out such as "Lions for Lambs" with Robert Redford. There's a bunch of anti-American movies out now, movies that distort the war against terrorism and the war in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Attacking businesses

OSHA HAS levied fines totaling $140,500 against Mid-South Steel. It's ridiculous for the federal government to put local companies out of business. And that's exactly what it's doing. Elections are coming up. Let's show our dissatisfaction and send OSHA packing.

Community colleges

I REJECT the idea that the state should tell a community college where it can and cannot establish a learning center and offer classes. As for the local educators who sent the letter to the state requesting Cape Girardeau County to be moved to the Mineral Area Community College service area: Who cares? They are not responsible for educating my children, nor are they paying the bill. I am. All interested citizens should contact their legislators and demand we in Cape Girardeau County be given a free-market choice. Allow both Mineral Area and Three Rivers Community College to establish centers here if they wish -- and any other accredited college or university for that matter -- and let us, the people who will be their customers, decide where we wish to spend our money for higher education.
