Parents like homework because it keeps the children out of their hair and, perhaps, off the streets. However, there is no correlation between the amount of homework assigned and student academic achievement test scores. Sorry.
Thank you, Southeast Missourian, for being online. And thank you to my dear son for providing his laptop to me while my husband is in the hospital in St. Louis. I have been able to keep up with our hometown news and was even able to see and hear a couple of scenes from the "Big River" musical at the new Southeast Missouri State University River Campus. What a treat. I'm so proud of my beautiful hometown's progress and so impressed with our hometown newspaper.
I am so sad that Sahara Aldridge passed away. My mom loves Rick Springfield, so that's how we heard about it. My mom was at the fund-raiser Rick Springfield fans gave for Sahara. It is a horrible thing that a 13-year-old died of cancer, I'm 13 too, and I know no 13-year-old wants to die at such a young age.
The article regarding Broadway is one of many we keep reading about with little action. Why does it take the city 23 years to tell the owner of the Esquire building to fix it up? If all the storefronts on Broadway were renovated with a professional scheme of colors, I believe businesses would be attracted to rent them. The shops should attract all age groups, not just college students. It amazes me that Paducah, Ky., has developed its riverfront and downtown and is now adding piers for restaurants and boat docking. The Carson Center always has better entertainment, and Paducah has decent retail shopping.
I WOULD like to comment about NASA's extravagant parties. The news said it's costing taxpayers $4 million a year for NASA to have these parties. I'm not a brain scientist or anything like that, but I think that's ridiculous. No wonder our taxes are so high. And Congress is letting NASA get away with this? Where else is our money going?
THANK YOU for paving Central Junior High School's parking lot. It amazes me, though, that when the school district does something, it is only halfway. As of last week, no parking lines were painted. I parked in my usual place and watched the resource officer yelling at other parents to park their cars. The parking lot was total chaos for some parents. The resource officer needs to chill and put the blame on the school district.
WITH THE 58,000-gallon oil spill in San Francisco Bay and the huge impact on wildlife, not to mention the environment and our health down the road, it is vital that we get going on ethanol. Pollution can be controlled, and cost can be dealt with. Coal emits much more pollution. We need to unite as Americans and let everyone else fight over foreign oil.
I WOULD like to commend whoever is responsible for the sport photos in the Southeast Missourian. They are always fantastic.
I THINK it's a sad state of affairs and truly shows the state of Southeast Missouri when you have a house as old and as distinctive as the Reynolds House that is falling apart. There are students from Southeast Missouri State University who are in the historic preservation department willing to fix it, but nobody's willing to put money toward it.
I WILL miss the charm of Rose Theatre at Southeast Missouri State University and probably the prices too. I don't see myself hurrying to the new River Campus. I understand the parking is not that great. The parking was terrible at the Rose Theatre, and I guess it's not much better at the new place. Who knows? Will Cape Girardeau be able to sustain the arts? Will people keep putting out the money for it? Of course, there's the competition with Paducah and the Carson Theater. Is there going to be enough money to go around for all these places? Only time will tell.
I READ the article about the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport getting new commuter service. I see the commuter plane is only flying to Cincinnati. What good is that? The only people I know going to Cincinnati are the Procter & Gamble group. More people in this area go to St. Louis.
U.S. SEN. Kit Bond and U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson have been representing this area for many a year, so if they endorse Rudy Giuliani, that's good enough for me. I voted for Bond and Emerson, so I respect their choice. I think, however, that Mitt Romney would have been a better choice to endorse.
