Rebate questions

WHAT ARE the rebates to taxpayers going to do for seniors who depend on Social Security and the small amount of interest they earn, since interest rates are being cut? Are the ones who receive the rebates going to be taxed next year on the check they received this year?

Delta grade school

WHY DOES the Delta School District have to buy more land to build a new grade school? It has 15 or more acres at the current site. Wouldn't it be more feasible to remodel and add onto the current building? This site was chosen because it was situated in the center of the district years ago. Don't the taxpayers have any say how their money's spent? If the district has so much extra money, maybe it can pay for tutors for the math students. Why is everything so hush-hush?

Shaky economy

AS THE shaky economy continues and a recession is just around the corner, go ahead and bury your head in the sand and claim that the liberal news media are trying to convince people. I think we can all see it in our purse. I know I don't take as many trips as I used to because of the high gasoline prices. Groceries are quite high.

Rebates for disabled?

I'VE JUST been reading in the paper about the tax rebates. Will senior citizens who are on disability be entitled to this also?

Avoid slick paint

SINCE REFLECTIVE lines on highways and streets are getting a lot of comments recently, let me add something. Please, if we do this, buy the proper paint that is not slick when wet. Europe uses this style of paint, and it's not a danger for motorcyclists. Even the current stuff we use might as well be ice when wet as far as a motorcycle rider is concerned.

Wait for walkers

THE PERSON who complained about pedestrians making him stop needs to read the law. Missouri Revised Statutes section 300.375 states clearly that drivers must yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Pump prices

SINCE A consumer can no longer purchase full-blend gasoline, I figured the price would decrease. I know my fuel mileage has taken a nearly 60-miles-per-tank hit, or roughly two gallons prior to the mandate. That translates to less mileage and more money. That's no alternative for me. Am I citing similarities between the oil barons and the ethanol hogs? It seems to me they both have you at the pump.

Country music

I WOULD like to thank Port Cape for bringing a country/Southern rock band to Cape Girardeau. There are so many good local bands, but they are all blues, alternative or rock. There are a lot of people who like country music. I have been to Port Cape the last two Sundays, and I have to say Whiskey Creek is one of the best local country bands I have ever heard.

Rough road

REGARDING ROUTE A from U.S. 61 to Chaffee: This road is falling apart. There are big holes in the middle of the road, and the shoulders are falling in. The highway department did some patching that has made this highway rougher than it was. It is bad when the county does a better job than the state. Scott County gets an A. The state gets an F. Please get off the interstate and fix other roads, please.

Spend it all

IF AND when you receive your tax rebate, please do the patriotic thing and rush right out and spend it, even on stuff you may not need nor want.

Daily issues

FOR THE person who was offended that Central High School is putting on "Grease": You should spend a day at Central to see the atmosphere. The themes that are of concern to you in "Grease" are right in the faces of students every day. Nearly one-third of the nation's teenagers are sexually active. During my freshman year at Central (2003-2003) there were 22 girls attending classes that were either with child or had a child under the age of 24 months. Take a walk in their shoes and see what it's like for students at Central. You wouldn't be so appalled at the fact that the theater department is putting on a production about the issues the students face daily.

Protecting children

THIS IS to the parents who brought their young children to see the movie "Rambo." What were you thinking? You exposed those children to some of the most brutal violence, torture, rape and extreme language. These are the things that parents are supposed to be protecting their children from.

Thanks to officer

I WAS in a funeral procession from Jackson to Cape Girardeau and want to thank the Jackson K-9 officer who showed his respect at an intersection. On the other hand, when we got to Cape Girardeau we had no police escort and the other drivers on the roadway showed no respect at all. One individual even broke through the line and cut in front of hearse.

Made elsewhere

I WENT shopping this past weekend. All of the clothing was made in China, Egypt, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and Mexico. I found no product in the store made in the United States. That is scary. No wonder we are on the verge of financial collapse.
