Coming off the winter months, the sights and sounds of spring are a welcomed change from winter's bluster. Locally, one of the first signs that spring is just around the corner is the start of Southeast Missouri State University baseball season.
On Tuesday afternoon the Redhawks played their home opener at Capaha Field. Thanks to a three-run home run in the eighth inning by All-American senior third baseman Trenton Moses, the team picked up a win -- the first of the year -- against Harris-Stowe State.
Tuesday's win brought the team a game closer to helping head coach Mark Hogan reach the 900-win milestone, with more than 500 of those wins taking place while at Southeast. In his 30-year career, Hogan has accumulated a record of 889-680-3.
Today the team returns to action with another home contest against IPFW. The 3 p.m. start at Capaha Field kicks off a three-game series against the Mastodons.
With forecasts calling for sunshine this weekend, consider heading out to Capaha Field and rooting on the Redhawks during this first homestand of the year. College baseball can be thrilling to watch, especially with the success the Redhawks have seen over the years. This team looks to carry on that tradition.
Go Redhawks!
