If you think today's teen-agers can't be serious-minded, just browse through the exhibits at the 37th annual Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair. The scope and complexity of these experiments are astounding. They speak to the creativity of the students and the motivation of their teachers.
Some of the exhibit titles can be intimidating: "Cryopreservation of Artemia Salina: Protection By Glycerol and DMSO" or "The Effects of Acid Rain on Plant Biomass, Sugars and Amino Nitrogent Levels in Glycine Max." Others speak to more practical issues: "Do Reebok Pumps or Nike Air Jordons Better Enhance Jumping Ability?" All entries demonstrate a tremendous amount of thought and effort by these aspiring scientists and mathematicians.
Considerable time and effort go into these projects. Often, the top winners will put two or three years of continuing research and development into their award-winning experiment. The exhibits were judged Tuesday by a select group of doctors, scientists and other professionals.
But don't take our word for the quality. The exhibits are on public display today between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Show Me Center. Admission is free. There are more than 200 entries in 22 categories, representing schools throughout Southeast Missouri.
Parents should also take their kids along. The best way to teach a love of science and math is by example, and these kids surely demonstrate that these disciplines are not only educational, but fun. The fair will culminate with an awards ceremony Thursday night. The two top winners will qualify for the 44th International Science and Engineering Fair at Mississippi Beach, Miss., in April.
This science fair is an educational process with a reward. There are few opportunities to recognize students for scholarship in math and science. It's also a chance for these students to come together and share their theories and vision. The science fair also helps to motivate students to continue their scientific methods. This kind of thinking process and abilities can take them far, no matter what career they pursue.
The science fair is a proud tradition for Southeast Missouri State University and the Southeast Missourian. Both are founding sponsors and have continued their enthusiastic endorsement for 37 years.
Many science fairs across the nation trace their roots to the 1950s, when science was booming with space exploration, new technology and genetic and biological breakthroughs. The aim was to bring students in line with the future of scientific research.
And at least in Cape Girardeau, the regional science fair has continued to do just that. A glance over the program handbook indicates that our students are keeping pace with scientific research and development. This fair is a testimony to the enterprising and gifted science and math students and teachers in Southeast Missouri.
