To The Editor:
I read with great interest the article in last Thursday's Public Mind column in the Missourian. It was well written by Mrs. Ann Parkinson. She pointed a finger at no individual, but to a group responsible for the change in trash pick up schedule. Her main points were pertaining to Charlotte County Florida.
1. There were two trash pick ups a week. The first pick up was for trash. The second of the week was done with two trucks, one for trash and one for recyclables. There was no charge for special pick ups.
2. Customers were furnished a plastic tub for recyclables. Personnel on the truck did the sorting at the point of pick up.
3. Customers were informed where to take used motor oil and other hazardous materials for disposal.
4. She asked of those responsible for the change had checked with other cities as to their procedure and if they had, maybe they had checked with the wrong people.
In my opinion, they had checked with no one; it was just one of those "This is the way we are going to do it." When the voters of Cape Girardeau voted for the increase in service fee, it was for two trash pick ups a week. I believe that this change is actually not legal due to the vote. This program is being shoved down our throats.
If Mrs. Parkinson wants to run for the city council, I'll work as her campaign manager for free.
