To the editor:
Human life begins with a microscopic dot, which contains all the intelligent information or genetic coding that determines who and what each human being will be. The coding tells our sex, the color of our hair, eyes and skin and the exact blueprint of everything we need to develop physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. The code will determine our personality traits and our special gifts such as our propensity for learning music, art, athletic abilities and every other characteristic that becomes evident in our life as we develop.
From this dot a growing process begins as cells rapidly form us into a mature being. The mystery and wonder is how rapidly our cells reproduce. Within each cell there is a mysterious flagellum that can spin 100,000 revolutions a minute and make a 180-degree turn. Microbiologists are seeking to determine the reasons for the function of this propeller-driven mechanism.
Nearly 3,000 years ago, the psalmist reported some astounding information about this dot which should help us understand what is taking place in the development of human life. Psalms 139 says, "You know every bone in my body. You know exactly how it was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something." Understandably, the human mind -- even of the scientist and the microbiologist -- finds it near impossible to grasp the intelligence which brought all of us into existence.
