One of the most bizarre news stories in recent weeks is from New Hampshire, the state that comes as close to direct democracy as any in the Union. Tiny New Hampshire's legislature, known as the General Court, includes a House of Representatives with 400 members -- the largest in the nation.

One of those 400 representatives was elected last fall, and only now are his colleagues discovering his view on police officers. Tom Alciere says they should be killed if they "cross the line," which, apparently in Alciere's view means doing just about anything to uphold the law.

There are no provisions for recalling legislators in New Hampshire, and Alciere is expected to serve. Voters, however, may want to re-examine how they made such a choice.
