It will be awhile before we know if the new president of Mexico, Vicente Fox, can provide the leadership to move the country ahead economically.
But we know that Fox, for now, has displayed some common sense regarding the virtual border war that exists between Mexico and the United States over the flood of illegal immigrants.
Fox said in a post-election interview that the solution lies not in expanding the army of border guards or heavier artillery. The solution, he said, will come when Mexico's economy is strong enough to make jobs and decent wages available so Mexicans will want to work in their own country rather than risk their lives looking for U.S. jobs.
Fox said he would make fighting poverty his first priority. Good. And good for the people of Mexico if he succeeds.
