To the editor:
The nation as a whole was against the bailout, but Congress voted against their constituents.
We are witnessing the fall of America, a free society governed by runaway greed, irresponsible spending habits by our elected representatives in Washington and a warmongering leadership. We are spending human life and billions of dollars every week on a military effort that cannot be won. We should practice isolationism, quit meddling with the world and use our own resources.
I'm afraid Lady Liberty is worn out.
Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
Give me your greedy, your connivers, your huddled crooks yearning to plunder, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the irresponsible, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my purse to the golden door.
DAN PHELPS, Cape Girardeau
