The existing portion of Cape LaCroix Trail has attracted thousands of walkers, runners, bikers and skaters over the years, making it one of the best-used facilities Cape Girardeau has to offer. For years, the city has been expanding and upgrading the trail system to connect all of the city's major parks.
Now plans are moving ahead to extend the Cape LaCroix Trail to the north to hook up with Cape Girardeau County Park North and the Missouri Conservation Department Campus and Nature Center. Along the way, the trail will make its way through a major new housing development called Walden Park in a public-private partnership that will benefit the community.
Once the northern extension is finished, trail users will be able to go from the county park through Osage Park and Arena Park to Shawnee Park without having to worry about congested streets.
The city's trail system, along with trails in the county parks and the conservation campus, offer a variety of walking difficulty, scenery and landmarks. Taken together, the trails offer something for everyone interested in spending some quality time outdoors.
