We have, in this scientific age, come to expect so much from medical science. As controversial as it is, the ability to test and manipulate human genes holds so many promises. As a result, there are thresholds through which many are willing to pass without knowing the consequences.
One consequence came this week as a young man died after an experimental gene-replacement procedure. Only days ago the U.S. health and human services secretary issued a warning about gene testing. Using this technique, many individuals are making choices to have major operations in order to avoid health risks indicated by the tests.
We have become a hurry-up society. If science holds the key to good health, we want it. Right now. Sadly, we may be unlocking doors that should have remained sealed.
