When more than 300 Christians marched through the streets of Cape Girardeau last weekend in the 1997 March for Jesus, they represented something that is ingrained in the community: Religion and spirituality are the backbone of our people, and there is unity among denominations in standing up for the religious underpinnings of our society.

Some 25 denominations were represented in the march, which was part of an international observance in 170 nations. The march annually brings together Christians of various traditions, ages and ethnic backgrounds in a display of ancient values as expressed through the various churches and their organizations.

Church members who participated in the March for Jesus are to be commended for their public display of something that is both a personal and corporate commitment.

It can be hoped that the values of church-goers will continue to have a lasting and powerful impact on the community.
