To the editor:

The children at May Greene School received $1,000 from the YELL program. These funds have been used to purchase 200 books for our classroom libraries.

The classroom libraries are a part of our accelerated reader program. This is a computerized, literature-based reading management program. The children spend 30 minutes of every school day reading books that they select from their classroom library. They take a computer test on the book read. The computer scores the test, calculates the number of points the student has earned and records the information.

The accelerated reader program provides opportunities for children to select and read quality literature. It also creates opportunities to improve their reading skills and foster the love of reading.
