While swapping war stories and drinking coffee in our dining room, several veterans noted that at many encampments someone almost always put up a post with arrows nailed on with the names of hometowns in the states and a rough mileage figure to that town, much like the sign seen in TV's popular "M*A*S*H" series.

Before long, someone suggested the idea for such a sign in front of the Missouri Veterans Home with arrows and mileage figures to places many residents had been during their service from World War II through Vietnam.

Because the residents here represent nearly 1,000 years of service to America and participation in nearly 2,000 land, sea and air battles, there were plenty of suggestions. Some of the residents are here because of wounds suffered in those battles.

Since the proposed sign would be a permanent fixture right outside our front door, it was felt it should be of quality workmanship and weatherproof, perhaps even made of metal. I am writing in the hope some reader may be able to make such a sign or direct us to a person or company that could. Calls should go to Ken Lipps at 290-5459.
