To the editor:
I would like to thank the Southeast Missourian for its coverage of the Southeast Hospice Music Festival showcasing great local talent and a special appearance by U.S. Sen. John Ashcroft. However, I am obligated to clarify some information.
Southeast Hospice is staffed by 28 paid employees including nurses, social workers, clergy, physicians, nurse assistants, secretaries and a coordinator of volunteers. In addition, we are proud to have a dedicated group of about 85 people from all over our service area who volunteer their time. These volunteers visit with the hospice patients, provide respite for caregivers, prepare meals, provide telephone reassurance during times of bereavement and assist with fund-raising activities and in the office.
To say that hospice care is free to those with Medicare and Medicaid is not entirely accurate. Medicare and Medicaid both have a hospice benefit available to those who qualify. Hospice care is covered 100 percent by these programs, and this care includes the provision of medications and equipment. Private insurance coverage varies.
Funds raised through activities such as the music festival are utilized to pay for simple necessities that those in our program cannot afford, including utilities, rent, groceries, assistance with funeral arrangements and medications for patients whose private insurance does not pay for prescription drugs. Social workers determine the need for such assistance.
Hospice care is a wonderful service for those nearing the end of life's journey. Thank you again for your coverage of our festival.
