To the editor:
As a relative newcomer to Cape Girardeau, I have been surprised and disheartened by the divisiveness that appears to be associated with the name Drury. I have read with interest the opposing viewpoints about Jim Drury's intent and vision for Cape. I have talked with many residents, trying to understand the history that elicits such fervent arguments. I have only been able to conclude that the name Drury represents a larger issue, which is: What is the future and identity of Cape Girardeau?
Currently, the arguments tend to break along old versus new or east versus west in relation to parts of the city. In the old, or eastern, part of the city are Southeast Missouri State University, the riverfront, downtown and the future River Campus. In the newer, or western, parts of the city are the Drury hotels, mall newer subdivisions and highway access. The two areas have very distinct identities and loyalists. It seems impossible for residents to believe that both are valuable to the city and its future.
So what will be the future for Cape Girardeau? I believe Cape has room for all the dreams and possibilities. I do not believe the only way for one group or one part of town to succeed is through the failure of another. Our ancestors know that, and Mr. Drury knows that too. In the St. Louis area, there are Drury hotels both downtown at Union Station and out in the suburbs. Both areas are important, and both areas thrive. Let all of us work toward honoring the past by building a future that supports all aspects of Cape Girardeau.
