To the editor:
In my sincere effort to help your sportswriters, who seem to be experiencing creative block, let me offer some suggestions.
It is not necessary to continually tell us how mediocre, so-so and futile Scott City's basketball program has been. We got the point the first 30 or so times. Just listing the coach's record is a more positive way to make your point than constantly denigrating former players and coaches. I have also noticed that in taking our school board to task you have mentioned several times the firing of a football coach after his one successful season. It is my understanding the board agreed to rehire him, but changes were made (with his input) to settle some conflicts. Maybe you could investigate and get both sides. I realize this would take some effort and be something new for you, but it might help you get it right.
One of your headlines asked what was going on with the school board. If it would be of help to you, I could send you a copy of a long list of building projects and facility improvements completed the last three years under this board and the plans for future construction thanks to the successful bond issue. This is, of course, a positive thing I don't expect you to use, but it's there if you need it.
Could you do something for me in return? I have a personal interest in how our school board will replace two important positions, high school counselor and special-education teacher. If our board hires someone mediocre or so-so in these positions, can I count on your support to expose them?
