To the editor:

We hope the flood of 1995 will not be a repeat of the flood of 1993. So far we have seen one identical and pleasant aspect: the support shown by communities, employers and families for the soldiers and airmen of the National Guard we have called to duty.

Members of the 1140th Engineer Battalion from Cape Girardeau who served in Ste. Genevieve were part of a team of volunteers consisting of area citizens and government agencies. The people at home were part of that team also.

Our thanks to the civilian co-workers and employers of our guard members who make the extra effort to fill in when duty calls someone away. The families of our guard members deserve recognition also. Spouses and children of guard members are called on to make very real sacrifices when a loved one is suddenly called away.

We owe a debt of gratitude to everyone whose support and understanding makes it possible for your National Guard to serve during this trying time.
