Jan. 22 marks the 28th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, legalizing abortion. In that time 1.5 million children a year have been killed.

As usual on Jan. 22, people who oppose abortions will be traveling to Washington, D.C., for the annual March for Life. This year, Jan. 22 marks a special event for those of us from Missouri. It is the day when Sen. John Ashcroft will face the pro-choice members of Congress as they try to block his nomination as attorney general.

If Ashcroft becomes attorney general, he will be in a position to advise George W. Bush on pro-life legislation that could pass constitutional muster and to influence the selection of pro-life judges. He could even lobby for a federal solicitor general who could argue that Roe vs. Wade should be looked at again.

It is time for all those who believe in the right to life to show their support for Ashcroft. Many of you will be unable to go to Washington, but there are two things you can do: You can pray that Ashcroft gets a fair shot at the office. Better yet, pray that he gets the office. And you can call (202) 224-3121 and voice your support for Ashcroft. He will appreciate knowing that he has your support. He is facing a bitter fight against his nomination.
