LETTERS OT THE EDITOR: POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE? LATE CHANGE IN REQUIREMENTS DRAWS FIRE: HOW DO THEY EXPECT TO EARN OUR TRUST

To the Editor,

I speak as an alumnus of Cape Central High School and the mother of two children who are alumni also, as I voice my disapproval of the recent decision of the school board and school superintendent with regard to the last minute changes in requirements for participation in graduation. The manner in which this decision was made has certainly sent a wrong message to our young people. If a change is to be made it should certainly require more in-depth thought than a parent calling the school board president who in turn calls the school superintendent, then a telephone survey of the other board members and then the decision becomes effective immediately. How can anyone who conducts business in this manner expect to earn the confidence of the public? It is my opinion that these people should be setting a better example for our young people.

In my dictionary, "completion" is defined as finished entirely (not almost). Also, self-esteem is the thinking well of oneself; self respect. At one point in my life, my self-esteem was at a very low point. I learned that regaining my self-esteem was accomplished by setting my goals and overcoming unexpected obstacles all by myself. Frankly, it would have been easier for family or friends to have removed the controllable obstacles, but self-esteem can not be given to you. It can only be earned by one's self. This is the philosophy I have instilled in my children.

Such an important decision as the changing of requirements for participating in graduation should only be made after careful consideration by many people including parents as well as students and be effective at the beginning of a school year.

This decision was made in a "kangaroo court" environment.
