To the editor:
I read in the June 1 Southeast Missourian about the proposed changes to the IRS. It seems that many congressmen and President Clinton are on the bandwagon for IRS reform.
There are many people, including tax consultants, CPAs and ordinary people like me who know that when you propose hundreds of changes to the already overburdened tax code, it will only lead to more bureaucracy, more forms and more confusion.
According to this article, "Lawmakers from both parties have dozens of bills, providing tax relief for almost every imaginable constituency," and "President Clinton himself is proposing 131 changes." I have the feeling that the only "constituency" that wouldn't benefit from any of these proposals are the taxpayers who are not currently receiving direct benefits from tax money.
Americans receive their rights from God, and with these rights come responsibility for themselves, their community, their friends and neighbors. We don't need government to regulate our lives or dictate our morals. We should be allowed to keep the money we earn and spend it as we please so long as we do not interfere with the rights of other individuals. It is wrong to steal money from one person in order to benefit another person. It is wrong to levy taxes on wages earned.
It is time to make our whole federal government more taxpayer-friendly by eliminating federal tax on income. Let the federal government live on the other taxes they receive, and let it get back to the business of protecting our individual freedom and our country from foreign invasion as dictated by our Constitution.
