To the editor:
Psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, psychiatrists and counselors in Missouri have formed a coalition to promote and educate in matters affecting the health and well-being of citizens of Missouri.
The Legislature is considering two bills to provide, for the first time, regulation of managed care in Missouri. House Bill 335 and Senate Bill 223 have both been voted out of their respective committees and placed on debate calendars with do-pass recommendations.
These bills mandate that physical and mental health services be treated equally, and they eliminate unqualified managed care gatekeepers and pre-approved visits to approved providers.
Two other significant aspects of this legislation ore the elimination of gag rules prohibiting doctors from discussing vital treatment options with a patient and a stronger commitment to patient confidentiality.
These bills will be coming up for votes in the near future. There will likely be strong opposition from the managed care and insurance industries. However, we strongly believe this legislation to be clearly in the best interests of the citizens of Missouri. We encourage everyone to call or write his state senator and representatives and ask for their strong support for this important legislation.
