Once again our local firefighters have come to the rescue with water. As a resident of downtown Cape Girardeau, I am keenly aware of things gone astray in my neighborhood. For the last two years the fountain at Common Pleas Courthouse Park has been inoperable. After many calls to local officials, I was repeatedly informed that the fountain was too old to be fixed. Being a preservationist and an antique aficionado, those were fighting words.

In desperate frustration during Random Acts of Kindness Week, I called the fire station and offered my problem to the folks who take problem solving seriously. Chief Robert Ridgeway agreed to take on the project immediately. The firefighters kept their promise. The fountain was turned on in time for the Olympic torch celebration.

The peaceful sound of the trickling water in the park again will bring smiles to children of all ages this summer. Thanks for all the scraping, painting and plumbing to preserve a historic landmark. Too old to fix? No way.

Thanks to the Southeast Missourian for developing Random Acts of Kindness Week. Some acts of kindness will be appreciated indefinitely.
