To the editor: I am optimistic that killing terrorists is possible -- and absolutely justified -- immediately for the sake of deadly retribution and, in a long-term sense, always for the sake of our very earthly existence. To spill the blood and bring the heads of those who masterminded the acts in September to the doorstep of democracy and freedom is an absolute cause, but it is merely like patching a boat in a murky sea of gigantic icebergs. ...

I am optimistic that killing terrorists is possible -- and absolutely justified -- immediately for the sake of deadly retribution and, in a long-term sense, always for the sake of our very earthly existence.

To spill the blood and bring the heads of those who masterminded the acts in September to the doorstep of democracy and freedom is an absolute cause, but it is merely like patching a boat in a murky sea of gigantic icebergs. In the long course of civilization, it is a glowingly comforting yet fleeting salve. The wound's prognosis for victorious eradication, resolution and complete rehabilitation is false.

Islamic radicals and other religious extremists hold beliefs and convictions that are as long in selfless dedication and determination as our collective memory is short. They never forget. Unfortunately, by the diversions of a robust economy and peace-loving complacency, we do. It is transparent that those coveted privileges are the least of what is at stake. Perception is a vital consequence of atrocious acts, and it has to become everlasting for our own good when acts undoubtedly occur tomorrow and long after we are all gone.
