The Veterans of Foreign Wars of Cape Girardeau is the responsible party that determines when the flags are flown. We recently increased the number of days per year to include Sept. 11, Dec. 7 and May 14. Each flag in the Avenue of Flags represents a deceased veteran from Cape Girardeau County. There are 497 in all, including Richard Wilson, Medal of Honor winner. Veterans Day was the first time all the flags have been flown.

A special thanks to the Junior Optimist Club for its help.

BILL HUMPHRIES, Senior Vice Commander,

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3838, Cape Girardeau
