The city of Jackson has joined the growing ranks of U.S. cities that offer a place for its residents to dispose of recyclable materials. This month Jackson opened its renovated full-service recycling center at 508 Eastview Court.

Not only will the center offer a place to get rid of rcyclable materials, but if people will use it the center will help reduce much of the trash that must be collected by the city. And the city will be able to recover some costs by selling the recyclable materials.

There are some guidelines.:

-- The center takes glass, plastic, paper, metal, and aluminum materials. Clear, brown and green glass containers are accepted.

-- Plastic containers are accepted if they are marked with a recycling symbol and made of No. 1 or 2 plastic.

-- Any kind of paper material is taken, including cardboard and junk mail. All paper materials must be either in paper or plastic bags or bundled with string.

Like anything new, the center, enabled by a Missouri Department of Natural Resources grant that paid for 70 percent of the renovation, will take awhile to catch on. But in time it will mean a lot to the city, which isn't alone in having to find ways of disposing of growing volumes of trash.
