We often speak out on ways to help members of our community, be it through churches, civic organizations or other opportunities. But there's another group that's also worthy of continued community support: animals at local kennels.
The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri takes care of many dogs, cats and other animals without a permanent home and reconnects lost animals with their owners. The local organization took in 3,830 animals last year and 368 were returned to their owners. Additionally, 1,475 animals were adopted.
While it's encouraging that many animals are finding good homes, the Humane Society is strapped for space for those remaining. With 81 spots for dogs, cats and other animals, the organization is preparing to unveil plans early next year to expand.
To fund this new shelter, the Humane Society will be looking to the community for financial support. The total cost has yet to be determined, but Requi Salter, a Humane Society of Southeast Missouri board member, said all donations, regardless of the amount, will be important.
With a new year just around the corner, consider what you might do to support this organization. Whether it's adopting an animal from the shelter, volunteering or financially supporting the organization, there is a need for more animal-loving individuals to help in the cause.
Thanks to the Humane Society and the other local shelters for playing an important role in our community. Your compassion and dedication is heartwarming and an inspiration to us all.
