HOSPITALS RECOGNIZE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS

Cape Girardeau is fortunate to have two first-rate medical centers. Two recent events at both hospitals provided a chance to appreciate the good work of both hospital staffs and volunteers.

Southeast Missouri Hospital recently held its annual dinner, and St. Francis Medical Center sponsored its annual auxiliary and volunteer appreciation luncheon.

About 850 supporters attended Southeast's annual dinner. They learned about hospital accomplishments both in care and construction.

Two Cape Girardeau residents were also recognized with well-deserved Outstanding Service Awards. The Rev. Dr. Ed Brasington was honored both for his service to the hospital and his ministry to patients and employees. Dr. James A. Kinder, a pediatrician for nearly 50 years, was recognized for his service to the hospital board and his care of infants and children.

At St. Francis Medical Center, auxiliary members and other volunteers were lauded by a crowd of 350.

Sister Jane Kiefer was also honored with the prestigious Vernice Baumstark Award for outstanding service to the hospital. She began as a social worker at the hospital in 1976, and later became director of social services and then chaplain in the pastoral care department.

The medical center also announced a new $1,000 scholarship in honor of Edythe Davis, who recently retired as executive director of the foundation.

These events at both St. Francis Medical Center and Southeast Missouri Hospital provide a good opportunity to pause and appreciate the fine medical services available and the extraordinary people who make the difference.
