The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department took out time last week to honor one of its own. Officer Ron Eakins was presented the Timothy J. Ruopp Award for his role in capturing a suspect in a two-day manhunt.

Sheriff John Jordan praised Eakins for his quick response and the fact he is always in the "thick of things." The presentation was made as part of National Law Enforcement Month.

Adding to the emotion of the presentation was the fact that many of Ruopp's family members were in attendance, including his widow, children and parents.

Timothy Ruopp, a former Cape Girardeau County sheriff's deputy, was killed in September 1984 in the line of duty in San Diego. That same year, the local award was established as a way to honor the outstanding officer each year.

The award provides a tangible reminder that law enforcement officers face danger in their daily duties. Ruopp was killed in a routine traffic stop. While issuing misdemeanor citations to two men who had supplied alcohol to minors, one of the men drew a weapon and killed Ruopp and his partner.

The award provides a solemn opportunity to remember Timothy Ruopp and other fallen officers. It also provides a timely reminder to pay tribute to law enforcement officers like Eakins who serve the public trust with dedication and distinction.
