Helping Haiti

A good many Southeast Missouri residents have connections to poverty-stricken Haiti, some through church organizations, some through their work with relief organizations and others who either have or have had family members living and working there.

Many more of us became a part of the Haiti story as we sought -- and found -- ways to help. We watched the newscasts and read the stories about the deaths, the destruction, the chaos and the efforts of dozens of nations to provide food, water, medical care and comfort. We were heartened by the story of two sisters from Pennsylvania who relentlessly -- and successfully -- arranged for the transportation of every child in an orphanage to the U.S. where most of them found adoptive parents waiting.

Haitians will be relying on the world's generosity for months, if not years. Many wonderful organizations that are providing aid are seeking contributions. Some donors have already learned not every organization places the highest priority on the earthquake's victims.
