When most of us think of domestic violence, we think of women being abused by men. Men, however, are also victims of abuse. When a man finds himself in that situation, he needs a support system just as much as a woman does. The Safe House for Women in Cape Girardeau now offers a support group.

The group for men will meet on Thursdays at A Step at a Time Counseling on Broadway, and Mary Ann Robertson, a Safe House staff counselor, will lead it. Counseling, court advocacy and now, the support group are available for male survivors of sexual abuse; stalking; and dating and domestic violence.

It may not be easy for men to reach out for this kind of help, but Safe House director Jessica Hill said the number of male victims seeking assistance from the Safe House is growing. In fact, it was a man who suggested the support group.

"As you can imagine, since we're just getting started, it's a little smaller now, but we anticipate growth as we get the word out," Hill said. "We hope knowing it's available will be the impetus they need to reach out," she said.

Sometimes, people are in abusive relationships without realizing the characteristics, so Hill told the Southeast Missourian that classic examples go beyond physical violence. They include verbal attacks and control of finances, behaviors that lead to "shame," "embarrassment" and "feelings of inadequacy." Abusers may be male or female.

Counseling and trust play major roles in getting out of these abusive relationships and rebuilding lives, so what the Safe House is offering is a positive service for our community. We hope every person in need of such support will take advantage of what the Safe House is providing.

"The main thing we want to share to males who experience this is it is not your fault. You deserve respect and compassion," Hill said.

Anyone who has suffered domestic abuse should call the Safe House at (573) 335-7745. "There are resources in our community to help. Don't let the fact our name is Safe House for Women keep you from reaching out to us," Hill said.
