One of the highlights of the Leadership Cape program every year is the presentation of project ideas. At the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce's First Friday coffee this month, four of the leadership groups presented their plans. Leadership Cape provides seven months of exposure to community operations and needs to its participants.
Two of this year's projects involved bicycle riding. One project would create bike lanes on some city streets, and another would encourage a bike-rental operation.
A third project would be an effort to educate residents and visitors about the city's history and points of interest. A fourth project would be a campaign to encourage residents to shop locally, thereby keeping the revenue in the local economy.
One of the facets of the leadership projects is identifying costs and coming up with a plan for covering those costs.
The project proposals are always interesting. As part of their involvement in the community, let's hope this year's leadership class will continue to promote their projects and, if feasible, make them happen.
