To the editor:
I disagree that our country is founded on Christian beliefs alone. As I recall, the idea expressed has long been freedom of religion (all religions, beliefs, spiritual practices etc.), not freedom to practice only Christian faith. These words of Emma Lazarus from "The New Colossus" written on the Statue of Liberty say it all for me:
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.
