I grow weary of the arguments put forth by the vote no people regarding the proposed smoking ordinance. Anyone who truly wants the facts needs to research this important issue rather than listening to false statements and allegations.

First and foremost, the issue is about health -- of workers and patrons. We are simply asking smokers to step outside to smoke so that those around you are not affected. There is absolutely no safe level of secondhand smoke, according to the latest surgeon general's report (300 plus studies back this up). Please read it!

Loss of business? Twenty-eight states have already gone smoke-free, indicating that it's working in those states. When a few restaurants are cited for closing you must determine the cause -- competition, bad management, bad economy?

Rights? Smoking indoors has been a privilege, not a right. Formerly, smoking was allowed in most places, but that was before we were educated on the dangers of secondhand smoke.

Ventilation systems? They don't work effectively enough to prevent inhalation of dangerous carcinogens.

Outside interest groups? The American Cancer Society is an organization that has a strong local presence in Cape Girardeau with fundraising and direct patient services. Over 2,600 Cape Girardeau residents signed the petition to be put on the ballot. Members of Smoke-Free Cape either live and/or work here.

Concerned citizens who want a healthier community, vote yes on April 5.
