The motoring public deserves an explanation of the erroneous Missouri Department of Transportation signs on Interstate 55 at exit 102. These signs defy any logic that I can apply to them and would seem to be grossly unfair to the motoring public.
This would appear to be the only exit between Memphis and St. Louis that is unidentified. And it is ambiguous in either direction. Traveling north, you find yourself in Cape Girardeau, but as soon as you exit you're not. Traveling south is more ambiguous. You approach MoDOT signs telling you that the next five exits are to Cape Girardeau. From this you assume that the next exit is Cape Girardeau. Next you pass a sign stating that LaSalle Avenue-East Main Street is 1 mile ahead, then there is the sign informing you that you are in Cape Girardeau. Now you come to exit 102 ("East Main Street/LaSalle Ave"). But guess what? As soon as you exit you're in Jackson. If you turn right you wind up in downtown Jackson. If you turn left and are not familiar with this area you are hopelessly lost.
The strangest of all is how all of the local news media have managed to be silent on this subject. I would like to know what gives between the two cities and MoDOT.
