DISTRICT FAIR WAS FIRST-RATE

The SEMO District Fair Board wrapped up its 141st edition with a smile. Despite some cooler temperatures and rain, attendance rose by some 10,000 this year.

That's a tribute to hundreds of dedicated volunteers who give thousands of hours to ensure a successful fair. Nearly 100,000 people visited the family-oriented festival this year.

Most of the fairgoers come from a 50-mile radius of Cape Girardeau, and the average family visits twice during the week. The fair board has worked hard to keep the prices reasonable and the entertainment appealing.

Each year, the fair combines tradition with invention. The agriculture exhibits still draw the crowds, but families also enjoy the novel offerings in business, food and fun.

As memories of cotton candy and bright lights fade for most of us, diligent fair volunteers are already looking ahead to the 142nd edition. It is that kind of dedication that pays off in a first-rate fair year after year.
