With the new system, requiring a city investment of some $2 million for trucks and containers, residents would put solid waste in one bin and recyclable materials in another bin, both supplied by the city.

City officials have heard questions and some concerns from residents. One concern is the size of the bins, which are considerably larger than the 35-gallon containers currently used. The proposed containers have wheels. Another concern is whether such large bins would fit inside garages or would have to stay outside.

Councilman Charlie Herbst suggested that the vendors seeking to sell new equipment and bins to the city might set up a demonstration for the public. This would go a long way in answering many of the questions.

Residents who have questions and concerns should contact city officials. The Girardeau Goes Green Advisory Board will meet Aug. 18 to review the trash plans.
