Christmas is so much a part of children's lives, and much of the seasonal rush seems to center on youngsters and their happy thoughts. But the holidays are for everyone, and it is too easy to overlook the needs and concerns of the elderly at this time of year.
But the Cape Girardeau County Health Department and the Southeast Missourian have been trying -- with considerable success -- for the past decade to make sure older residents of the area have bright and happy holidays too.
Christmas for the Elderly is a program that matches generous donors with elderly residents in need of a bit of holiday cheer. Sometimes this is as simple as a small gift that shows somebody remembered. Sometimes it means helping with a medical bill or buying groceries.
Whatever the expression of Christmas cheer, the effort is worthwhile. Gifts or financial donations may be made to Christmas for the Elderly, P.O. Box 699, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63702-0699. Or call Kim McDowell at 335-6611 for more information.
