Cyclists have had an abundance of sunshine and warm weather recently to enjoy a ride along area streets, parks and trails. And while Southeast Missouri is typically a great place to enjoy this outside activity, bicycles can be stolen.
Fifty-six bicycles were reported stolen last year and 42 were found, according to police spokesman Darin Hickey. There were similar numbers in 2010. While some owners are reconnected to their stolen property, other bikes remain in a basement until sold at a police auction.
In an effort to help return stolen bicycles to their owners, the Cape Girardeau Police Department has started a free bike registration system. The idea is that individuals will choose to register their bikes and the department will place a sticker on it that is difficult to remove.
If you're interested in registering a bicycle, a form can be printed off at www.cityofcapegirardeau.org/police and submitted to the department. Identification appointments can be made through the department, and officials will be on hand to register bicycles at parks and recreation events.
