This year will mark 45 years since the Golden Eagles marching band performed at the half-time show in Super Bowl V. I want to bring attention to the significance this program has had on its past and present students. It’s an honor to say I was part of such an exemplary program.
As a former member of the Southeast Missouri Golden Eagles marching band, I feel that once a Golden Eagle always a Golden Eagle. You learn pride, discipline, responsibility and satisfaction. If you ever played under the direction of LeRoy Mason, you will never forget him.
If marching at a pro football halftime in a torrential rainstorm to a standing ovation while playing the Battle Hymn of the Republic doesn’t have an effect on you, nothing will.
I feel the Golden Eagles marching band is not only a part of the university but a part of the city of Cape Girardeau. It has brought recognition to the city from its origin to the present day which the city should be proud of, recognize and never forget. The band has become part of the history of Cape Girardeau.
How many other marching bands have played at a halftime show in a Super Bowl? How many of the bands had their entire halftime performance broadcast with no interruptions?
Many things have contributed and become a part of the history of Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri State University. The Golden Eagle Marching Band will always be a key part of that history.
