Today has been designated a national day of prayer for those affected by Hurricane Katrina. Most churches will be open from noon to 1 p.m. Some churches will have community prayer services. Others will offer a refuge for those who want to offer private prayers and reflect on the events of recent weeks.

There are so many individuals who have been touched in one way or another by the hurricane:

* There are those who were killed or injured by the storm.

* There are those who survived unscathed only to see their homes destroyed.

* There are those who have devoted countless hours to rescuing storm victims.

* There are those who are working to clean up after the storm and restore homes, businesses and industry.

* There are those who have donated from their hearts to provide assistance that is so badly needed.

* There are thousands of volunteers who have helped in amazing ways so that organizations like the Red Cross and Salvation Army can respond wherever they are needed.

* There are those who have provided spiritual comfort and support to those whose lives have been changed forever.

* There are leaders of our towns and states and nation who seek to take appropriate action in the wake of nature's devastation.

For all of these, pray on this national day of prayer.

A prayer for Sept. 16, 2005

Almighty God, who has given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech you that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of your favor and glad to do your will. Bless our land. Save us from violence, discord and confusion. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to your law, we may show forth your praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in you to fail. All of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
