HONORS

• Wade Cramer of Jackson was recognized April 17 at an Honors Day ceremony for seniors at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo. Cramer, a member of the honor society Phi Eta Sigma, will graduate May 10.
• Saxony Lutheran High School students competed in the Sikeston Bootheel Art Show. Deanna Dippold placed third in mixed media and received an honorable mention in fibers and two honorable mentions in drawing. Other winners were: Natalie Berry, first in mixed media; Garrett Ruppell, first in painting and honorable mention in drawing; Casey Bell, second in painting; Alex Rodewald, first in sculpture; Allie Birk, third in ceramics; Zach Urhahn, honorable mention in ceramics. Berry also received first place in the Jackson VFW Poster Contest and Kelsey Overbeck received second place.
• Laura Lusk of Cape Girardeau Central High School was honored by the Missouri Board of Education for receiving the 2008 Outstanding Achievement in Citizenship Award.
• Shawnee Elementary School-South in McClure, Ill. received the Illinois Spotlight School Award for the fourth year in a row and the Academic Improvement Award for the first time.
• Emily Weisenberger, a seventh-grader at Central Junior High in Cape Girardeau, placed first in the 2008 Law Day Essay Contest, sponsored by the Missouri National Education Association and the Missouri Bar Young Lawyers Section. Students Ross McClanahan and Cali Knepp placed in the final six. The theme of the essay was about how laws help or hurt a free society.
• Lea Anne Ruch, a graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School, received the Non-traditional Math Award at Three Rivers Community College on April 21.
• Katey Lastrapes of Cape Girardeau placed first in her the sixth- to eighth-grade category at the Paducah Art Show. Mackenzie Hill of Jackson placed second. Ellen Wang of Cape Girardeau placed third in the third- to fifth-grade category, and Kayley Sudermann of Jackson placed third in the kindergarten to second-grade category.
