  • Melody Stone of Cape Girardeau has been awarded a Regents Scholarship and a Missouri Assessment Program Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Stone is a graduate of Central High School. She is the daughter of Barry and Elaine Stone.
  • Dale Brannock and Brianna Egbuka, both of Cape Girardeau, and Jared Strong of Jackson have been awarded President's Plus scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University. Brannock and Egbuka also received Missouri Assessment Program scholarships. Egbuka and Strong also received Missouri Leadership awards. Brannock and Egbuka are graduates of Central High School in Cape Girardeau. Brannock is the son of Kevin and Susan Brannock. Egbuka is the daughter of Denise Egbuka. Strong, a graduate of Eagle Ridge Christian School, is the son of Zackery and Diane Strong.
  • James Red Cloud of Ullin, Ill., has been awarded a Community College Scholarship and Regional Achievement Award to attend Southeast Missouri State University. A graduate of Shawnee Community College, he is the son of Sharon and James Red Cloud Jr.
  • Marcus Painton of Oran, Mo., has been awarded President's, Missouri Leadership, Missouri Assessment Program and Missouri Boys State scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. A graduate of Bell City High School, he is the son of Don and Rhonda Painton of Oran.
  • The Cape Girardeau Kiwanis Club has awarded $1,000 college scholarships to 28 area students: Angelica Rousel, Allison Payne, Emily Hiett, James Flesher, Sarah Ressel, Katelyn Stovall, Matthew Hileman, Zachary Bowles, Sarah Schneider, Alexander Bettinger, Rachel Cain, Anne Bernhardt, Kathryn Renfrow, Hunter Givens, Kyla Valleroy, Ashley "Crockett" Leible and Paige Reynolds, all graduates of Central High School; Emily Huber, Abby Janet, Arthur Lindeman, Destiny Dirnberger, Jonathan Allison, Asa Gray, Jason Hine, Christina Renick, Eric Marquart II and Haley Bohnert, all graduates of Notre Dame Regional High School; and Zachary McDaniel, graduate of Chaffee High School.
  • Daniel Dawson of Chaffee, Mo., Deanne Michelle Whitlow of Jackson, Tiffani Stone of Bell City, Mo., and Ryan Stauser of Scott City have been awarded Incentive scholarships to attend Three Rivers Community College at Poplar Bluff, Mo. A graduate of Chaffee High School, Dawson is the son of Natasha Fink of Chaffee and Daniel Dawson of Honolulu. Whitlow, a graduate of Jackson High School, is the daughter of Susan and Dean Whitlow of Jackson. Stone, a graduate of Bell City High School, is the daughter of Leasa Stone of Bell City. Stauser, a gradute of Scott City High School, is the son of Karin Dykes and Kevin Strauser of Scott City.

Christopher Daniel, son of Charles and Mary Ann Daniel of Cape Girardeau, graduated cum laude from the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering.

Wade Cramer of Jackson has been named to the spring semester honor roll at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo.

EXTRA CREDIT

  • Cape Girardeau Sam's Club announced its Teacher of the Year. The Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year program is in its 12th year and has recognized more than 26,000 teachers nationwide. Each year every Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Neighborhood Market, warehouse and distribution center takes nominations from the community for Teacher of the Year for local school districts. One teacher is selected from the nominations. Cape Girardeau Sam's Club recently honored its Teacher of the Year, Lynne Karnes from St. Vincent de Paul Elementary School in Cape Girardeau. Sam's presented the school with a $1,000 check to be used in a manner chosen by Karnes and principal Kay Glastetter. In addition, Karnes received a Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year polo shirt, Teacher of the Year certificate, $100 gift card for classroom supplies and an invitation to apply for Wal-Mart Missouri Teacher of the Year, where the winner is awarded $10,000 and goes on to a national level. Karnes' photo will be posted in the local Sam's Club, honoring her for the next year.
  • Pam Dumey was chosen as a participant in the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund (JFMF) Teacher Program. Dumey, from Central Middle School, was selected from a national pool of more than 1,700 applicants by a panel of educators for the trip. The program allows distinguished primary and secondary school educators in the United States to travel to Japan for three weeks to promote greater intercultural understanding between the two nations. Dumey will be among 200 educators visiting Japan this month.
