Floodwaters had crept up Main Street in Cape Girardeau to a point midway between Themis and Independence streets when this photograph was taken in 1951. Note the boardwalks built over the water on both sides of the streets, allowing shoppers to get to Montgomery Ward and Gateley's. The Mississippi crested July 24 that year at 41.8 feet. (G.D.
